HPE – Hydro Power Equipment
Mining pipeline and underground pump column valves and fittings
Upwey Group is the Australian agent for the HPE range of valves and couplings for use in high pressure mining pipelines and underground pipe column systems.
HPE’s column surge protection system protects against pump motor trip outs and minimizes pressure surges and water hammer in pipelines. All necessary protection is allowed for and a column drain valve is usually incorporated to drain the column should maintenance or repair work be required.

Pump Control Valve: (View Pump Control Valve PDF [667 kb])
- Limits opening on pump start up until back pressure in the column is high enough to prevent pump motor overload.
- Minimizes pressure surges when pumps are stopped and started. Automatic closure on pump trip-outs. Manual override is optional.
- Acts as a back-up non-return valve.
Column Drain Valve: (View Column Drain Valve PDF [383 kb])
- Can be throttled for an extended period of time ie: repeated draining of a column
Surge Relief Valve: (View Surge Relief Valve PDF [661 kb])
- Controls pipeline pulses generated by pump trip-outs
- Prevents pressure from rising above its own set-pressure
- Minimizes pipeline failure and support bracket damage resulting from pump trip outs
Safety Isolation Valve (High and Low Pressure): (View Safety Isolation Valve PDF [186 kb])
Incorporates both excess flow shutdown and tight shut-off isolation functions. In the event of an excess flow condition arising, example from a pipe burst, the valve will close automatically. To avoid pressure surges (ie. water hammer), the valve closes in two stages: initially very rapidly to prevent runaway flow, then finally slowly to give a soft shut off. Safe filling, flushing and isolation of pipelines are guaranteed, whether the valve is operated manually or by an actuating cylinder.
- Internally pre-set to specific max. trip flow rates
- Fail-safe closure
- Fail-safe pipeline filling and flushing
Pressure Reducing Valves (High and Low Pressure)
Further information on all Pressure Reducing Valves
Pressure Regulating, Internal and External Ratio Valves, as well as Multi-Stage Ratio Valves available for varying ratios from as low as 1.2: 1 up to 20:1 using a steel body (maximum rating of 25MPA) with finite pressure adjustment control to suit your individual requirements.

- Multi Stage Ratio Valve (View Multi Stage Ratio Valve PDF [71 kb])
Energy Dissipator: (View Energy Dissipator PDF)
Reduces upstream pressure to a predetermined downstream pressure at a constant nominated flow rate by directing the flow through a row of engineered perforated plates mounted within a cylindrical housing.
- Designed to ANSI B16.34 as per valves
- DN20 to DN350
- 3MPA to 30Mpa
- Noise level (at a distance of 1m from the dissipater) is 90 decibel maximum
High Pressure Pipe Couplings : (View High Pressure Pipe Couplings PDF [206])
The safe, easy and economical way of joining high pressure pipes compared with traditional flanges.
- Designed in accordance with ANSI/ASME VIII
- Designs tested and approved by CSIR Miningtek to burst pressure in excess of 5 times the rated working pressure
- Installation is quick and easy – the clamp and hub joint is much quicker to install than flanges of similar rating due the smaller number of bolts, and is less expensive than flanges of similar rating
- DN50 to DN200
Backfill/Mud Diverter Valve : (View Backfill/Mud Diverter Valve PDF [168 kb])
Diverts the flow of backfill material from one point of placement to another as well as diverting flush water away from the placement point when pipes are flushed at the end of a backfill placement cycle. This ensures that the placed backfill material is not diluted or washed away by the flush water.
- 65mm bore, flanged DN80
- Maximum working pressure 3.5 MPa
- Port for drain valve to indicate when flush water reaches the valve
